Coach of the Year

Larry Elliott and Jake Bergmeier, Kennedy Catholic

Coach Larry Elliott and Coach Jake Bergmeier co-coach both teams and led the boys back to prominence in Section 1. The Gaels placed third in a tough league and placed an impressive sixth at the Class B sectional meet. The team also placed well at the Somers Lions Club Meet and the Mamaroneck Relays, winning trophies at both meets. Dylan Schuck won the County Title in the pentathlon with an excellent score of 3,005. Elliot and Bergmeier had three individual champs at the Class B Sectional meet with Jesse Aprile (triple jump), Schuck (pentathlon), and Michael Campobasso (110-meter hurdles). The team also sent Campobasso (hurdles) and Schuck (pentathlon) to the state meet. Jesse Aprile also almost made the team. Both Schuck and Campobasso medaled in sixth place at states in their events respectively. In addition to their success with the boys, Jessica Kendzor and Danielle Asaro also qualified for states giving Kennedy four athletes at states.

Kennedy picked up two medals at the New York State Track and Field Championship, with senor Dylan Schuck and sophomore Mike Campobasso both placing 6th in the Division II competition. Campobasso qualified for the finals of the Division II 110 meter hurdles final with a time of 15.90 to qualify in the sixth position in the trials. In the finals, Campobasso earned a state medal with a sixth place finish in a time of 16.01. His goal going into the state meet was to win a medal and he started that he knew he could do it if he just ran near his best.

Senior Dylan Schuck also won a medal with a sixth place finish in Division II pentathlon, with a score of 3005, just a few points off his personal best. Schuck ran a time of 16.36 in the 100-meter hurdles and cleared 5-4 1/4th in the high jump. He also had a very solid leap of 20-2 1/4th in the long jump and a personal best throw of 38-6 ¾ in the shot put. Schuck finished his day with a clocking of 4.52.13 in the 1500 meter run. Schuck, who thought he could compete for a top three medal going into the meet, scored well in every event in a very deep field. He placed 17th overall in Federation scoring (overall for Division I and II and private schools)

Danielle Asaro of Kennedy Catholic recorded two personal bests in the state meet in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. In the Division II 100-meter race, Asaro dashed to a personal best time of 12.88, which put her in 12th place. The junior recorded her second personal best time of the weekend with a clocking of 26.37 in the 200-meter dash to place 14th in Division II.

Jessica Kendzor of Kennedy Catholic placed ninth in the Division II 400-meter dash with a time of 59.14, coming within 1.26 seconds of a medal. Kendzor, a senior, had an ambitious schedule, as she only had 45 minutes of rest between the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run, for which she also qualified. Kendzor raced to a time of 2:19.144 in the 800-meter run, which placed her 13th in Division II and 25th overall in the Federation competition.

When it comes to advancing to state competition in the ultra-competitive world of high school track and field, any team would be proud to send two representatives. This weekend, however, little Kennedy Catholic is sending four athletes – in six events - to face the best the state has to offer in the Binghamton suburb of Vestal.

Competing for the Gaels in the small-school (Division 2) showdowns will be Jessica Kendzor in the 400- and 800-meter runs, Danielle Asaro in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Michael Campobasso in the 110-meter hurdles and Dylan Schuck in the pentathlon.

And any or all of the Somers school’s representatives could wind up on the Division 2 medal stand. Schuck off his overall performances looms as the favorite in the pentathlon. Kendzor is no worse than #2 in the 800.

“I’m kinda confident with all of them,” said Larry Elliott, the co-coach with Jacob Bergmeier, in what has been a resurgent year for the Gaels’ track program.

Kendzor, who is a regular at state competition indoors and out as well as in cross-country, has spent her time at Kennedy amassing high marks and high performances. She has written rewritten and again revised the school’s running records and currently holds *eight of them: 300, 400, 800, 1,000, *1,200, 4x400 *(indoor), 4x400 *(outdoor), and the *3.0 mile (XC). The Lehigh-bound senior, who plans to study environmental engineering, won the D-2 state qualifier 400 in 58.96, but actually ran better in the 800, with a personal-best of 2:14.52 in losing to longtime rival Henrietta Miers of Bronxville by a quarter of a second.

“Jessica has been very focused this year,” Bergmeier said. She would sometimes let things bother her. And, I think in college, where she will be working out with some kids better than her, she will improve even more.

But first comes states this weekend. And it’s not who – Miers – but when the 800 is held that concerns Kendzor.

My two events are 50 minutes apart, with the 400 first,” she said. “I’m a little nervous about that. But if I want to go out with a bang at the end of my senior season, I’ll have to deal with it.

“Jessica has a really good shot at the 800,” Bergmeier said.

Kendzor actually had nine school records until recently.

Asaro, who surprised everyone with a 26.53 victory in the 200 at state qualifier, had claimed the 200 mark.
“She blew them away in the 200,” Elliott said.

“She’s a front-runner,” Bergmeier added. “She thrives on hearing those footsteps.” The diminutive junior, Bergmeier said, is “always smiling. When she won that 200, she burst out laughing. She’s short in stature, but not strength.”

“I’ve really worked on my form; on what I needed to do on turns,” Asaro said. “Making the 100 is really what I was aiming for (second in a qualifying time of 13.12). Winning the 200 was shocking at first; when it sunk in, I was excited. Winning (at states) would be amazing.”

Asaro has turned a 12.2 100 and a 26.1 200.

Also “very surprised and extremely excited” was the youngest member of the Kennedy quartet, Campobasso. The sophomore captured the 110-meter hurdles in 15.89 seconds.

“He’s one of the most driven and dedicated kids you will ever meet,” Bergmeier said of the 100-plus student who plans to study engineering at MIT. “His abilities are incredible-he’s a former ranked gymnast and keeps getting better.”

While his time is out of medal range, Campobasso is undeterred.

“Everyone has a chance on any given day,” he said. “My goal is to go under 15 seconds (medal territory). If not this year, then next.”

Schuck, the slashing halfback and determined linebacker who turned games around in leading Kennedy to the football playoffs, shows equal versatility in track and field. While he won the state qualifier with 2,851 points in the five events of the pentathlon, he has a personal best of 3,009. The 6-1, 185 lb-pounder has had efforts that would have made states individually in the long jump – which he did as a junior – the 110-meter hurdles and is quite fast in the 1,500 meter run, the bane of many pent-athletes.

“He is tremendously strong, “ Bergmeier said.

Which makes it something of a surprise that his lowest-scoring event has been the shot put, where the two-sport athlete bound for Union College has a 34-9 best.

“We’ve been working on his shot put,” said Elliott who brought in an outside shot put coach to help Schuck last week. “Right now, we’re hoping for something close to 40 feet.”

If he gets it, the gold medal should follow.

“Just making states is such an honor,” Schuck said, “and I’m going with great teammates.”

Actually, Kennedy has had five standout athletes who helped the boys’ team finish first in their league indoors and third outdoors, while the girls finished second in both. But senior Jesse Aprile, hoping to wind up his high-school career at states, just missed out. He was a half-inch short of winning the D-2 long jump qualifiers (automatic berth) and five inches short of the qualifying distance. He also missed the triple jump by those same five inches.

“He was heartbroken,” Kendzor said, sympathetically.

Sporting newly modified marine-style haircuts and matching v-neck black shirts, Dylan Schuck and Michael Campobasso were given instructions by Coach Elliot to make a statement by example in their events. And that, they did! Both Kennedy athletes medaled at the State Meet in Vestal, New York. Dylan Schuck placed sixth in the pentathlon and Michael Campobasso placed sixth in the 110 Meter Hurdles. Both athletes stood on the podium and were awarded NYS championship medals for their effort.

Jessica Kendzor turned in two fine performances in the 400 and the 800. Jessica finished 9th in the 400 Meter dash finals. From the 400 Meter finish line, she dashed to the clerk's booth to check into the 800 Meter run. 45 minutes after she finished the 400, she ran the 800 Meter finals and finished 11th.

Danielle Asaro made a mad dash to the finish line in the 100 Meter and 200 Meter races. She crossed the line 12th in the 100 Meters. Just a few events later, she ran the 200 Meters and finished 14th. In both cases, she ran amazingly fast.

Friends (Ms. Kastberg, Catherine Kastberg, Laura Kastberg, Anthony D., State Pole-vault Champion Carissa Leonardi, Legendary Libby Lazarre, her dad Steve & family, joined Kennedy Catholic family members, Coach Elliot, Coach Bergmeier, and Sister Janet in support of KC's exceptional track athletes. The Kennedy Catholic Track family celebrated Friday night at a Japanese Steak House (Hibachi style) and Saturday at Roscoe's Famous Restaurant in Trout City USA.

Kennedy Catholic also qualified two athletes for states in Division II. Dylan Schuck, a senior, won the pentathlon with a score of 2,851 points. Schuck scored well in all 5 events. He clocked 16.66 for the 110-meter hurdles, threw the shot put 34-4 ¼, high jumped 5-3, long jumped 19-7 ½ and ran the 1,500 meters run in a time of 4:47.97. Another Gael, Michael Campobasso won the Division II 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.89 to also qualify for states.

Kennedy Catholic very nearly had three athletes at states, as senior Jesse Aprile placed second in the Division II long jump with a leap of 20-1 ½. He also ran well in the 100 meters, clocking 11.67 in the finals for a fourth-place finish.

Girls

Kennedy Qualifies 2 Girls

Four North County athletes qualified in six events.

Kennedy Catholic’s Jessica Kendzor and Danielle Asaro both qualified for states in Division II in two events. Kendzor placed second in the D II 800-meter run in a personal best time of 2:14.52, which was just .26 from first place, and well under the standard to earn a trip to states. She came back on day 2 to win the 400-meter dash in a time of 58.96. She is ranked third in the state in Division II in the 800-meter run and is ranked eighth in the 400-meter dash.

Asaro placed second in the D-II 100-meter dash with a time of 13.03 to earn a ticket to states. She came back on day two to win the 200-meter dash in a time of 26.53.

She is ranked 14th in the state in the 100-meter dash and 17th in the 200-meter dash.

Kennedy almost added two more athletes to their state roster. Asaro, Breeda Mannion, Catherine Kastberg and Kendzor placed second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:14.10. Their season best time just missed the second place-qualifying standard of 4:07.74.

Not a Dry Eye In the Place

The annual Kennedy Catholic spring track dinner was held in the Lakeside Room on Tuesday, June 1st. Laughter permeated the room. Tears were in abundance. ‘Twas was a family affair.

As the emotion “runneth over,” athletes were honored with a cornucopia of medals, honors and plaques. Most Valuable Player Awards were bestowed upon Jessica Kendzor, Dylan Schuck and Jesse Aprile. The Most Improved Athlete Awards were awarded to Danielle Asaro and Anthony Djerdjaj.

The seniors were honored by the underclassmen in word and in gift. Sister Janet Meehan, longtime coach and longtime fan of track and field was there to wish her seniors well.

Jessica Kendzor thanked Mr. Jake Bergmeier for 4 years of genuine zeal, ardent enthusiasm, sincerity and encouragement. She noted that his discourse with her Lehigh University coach helped her to land a lucrative alumni track grant that will allow her to attend the college of her dreams. Eric DiNome complimented Coach B’s superb photography. Eric suggested that the track team members consider him as their wedding photographer. Brendan Page thanked Mr. Bergmeier for tips on running shoes and a bobbing head. Mr. B is also the authority on shoe matters for the team.

Tears flowing, Breeda Mannion thanked Coach Frank Mannion, her daddy. She gave her dad his due. She brought smiles to the crowd as she explained that thanks, in part to her dad, she WILL BE ATTENDING NAVY! In time, she will compete on the track against her longtime friend and running partner, Jessica Kendzor in the Patriot League.

Coach Elliot ‘s Top Ten once again met the controversial standards that he alone has set so high. He never fails to entertain. Jesse Aprile, however, upstaged his act, this night. Jesse stole the spotlight with a moving tribute to Coach El. In this author’s own admission, Jesse’s speech was the best that I heard in years. Coach Bergmeier hopes to acquire Jesse’s speech and frame Jesse’s words on the blog.

The Schuck family provided a DVD of season highlights put to music. Everyone enjoyed the jumps, throws, and runs. Even Coach Elliot was shocked and awed. There was a special clip about our seniors. Don Schuck caught many touching moments throughout the year and Debbie Schuck must have spent an inordinate amount of time to prepare the DVD. Many commented on the professional aspects of the DVD. Every track athlete will receive a DVD.

Finally, as an additional highlight of the night, Alex Cecere sat back and enjoyed while his brother, Hollywood-bound Zach and Stand-Up Comedian, Matt, announced this season’s Couples Awards. This year there were 2 couples. Couple #1: Michael Campobasso and Danielle Asaro. Couple #2: Danielle Asaro and Anthony Djerdjaj. Pictures are shown here so that you can cast your vote. So it was. Not a dry eye in the place.

S1 State Qualifiers: Asaro, Campabasso, Kendzor and Schuck – “We are the Champions!”

“4 athletes, 6 events!” exclaimed Coach Jake Bergmeier as he used his blackberry to book a hotel for states that would be big enough to house the delegation of athletes, coaches, family and friends from Kennedy Catholic. Meanwhile, Coach Elliot directed the Journal News reporters to his athletes for interviews with a boyish smile that reached from ear to ear. The hard work of the coaching staff combined with the dedication of the student athletes paid dividends at the 2 day 2010 State Qualifier meet.

Jessica Kendzor quietly led the way, by example. as she often has, for 4 years in the XC and Track programs at Kennedy. As she wraps up her high school career, she shines as simply the best in the storied history of the Kennedy Catholic program. In the autumn of the 2009-2010 season, Jessica finished 10th at states in the 5K. In the winter, she ran the 26th best time in the United States in the 1000-meter middle distance race. She began the spring season by winning 2 gold medals (400, 800) at ESPN’s Inaugural Walt Disney World Invitational. Now, in late spring, on Friday night, she set her 9th school record in the 800 meters, with a US first team elite time of 2:14.52. This ranks her as 148th in the United States out of 65,505 runners in the 800. On Saturday, she proved her remarkable versatility by winning the 400-meter dash in the State Qualifier in a personal best time of 58.96. With this time, Jessica broke her own school record. She has been clocked even faster (57+ and 58.0) as the anchor for Kennedy’s 4x400 relay teams. She qualified and will run in state meet in the 400 and 800 (events that are 45 minutes apart). Jessica now ranks 3rd in the 800 and 6th in the 400 as she heads to the state meet & to the final chapter of her high school career.

What can be said of Dylan Schuck? The Journal News reports the following, and I quote: “Julius Simmons of Clarkstown South emerged as the winner of the Division I pentathlon, and Dylan Schuck of Kennedy finished first in the event for Division II.”

What the Journal News stopped short of reporting is that this was Dylan’s third major pentathlon gold medal in 3 weeks. He won the Westchester County Championship and then the Sectional championship.

During the State Qualifier, Dylan totaled 2851 points. This ranks him as 4th in Division 2 in NYS. Last week at Sectionals, Dylan amassed 3009 points. This total places him 1st in NYS, Division 2.

“Two peas in a pod,” is how Mr. Schuck describes Dylan Schuck and Jessica Kendzor. They have brought the swagger back to Kennedy Catholic sports programs. Dylan was highly courted by Union College. At Union, he will play football (he has starred at Kennedy and led the football team to the Section 1 finals). He will also do track and study environmental engineering. The other pea in the pod, Jessica, will run track for Lehigh University (tuition free thanks to an alumni track grant & other funding). Guess what she will study. Yes, you guessed it, environmental engineering.

Danielle Asaro, what a bright star is she! She was written about in the sports section of The Journal News, May 30, 2010. Here is a direct quote of what was written:

“Another multi-qualifier was Danielle Asaro of Kennedy. The junior had qualified in the 100 dash on Friday and followed up that strong performance with another first-place finish in Division II, this time in the 200 dash.

Asaro qualified for states for the first time in the 200, with a personal best of 26.53.

"It's been a lot of hard work and I've done a lot of work on sprinting and my starts," Asaro said. "It's an amazing feeling to make it. I'm definitely looking forward to states and can't wait."

By the way, as a direct result of her performance at the State Qualifier in the 200 meters, Danielle broke Jessica Kendzor’s 200-meter school record time of 26.6. Jessica had been tied with the former Kennedy star. When it happened, Jessica was all smiles. After all, records are made to be broken and Jessica is Danielle’s biggest friend and fan.

Danielle is ranked 14th in the 100 and 17th in the 200 in Division 2 as the State meet draws near. And, she has been clocked faster than her current listings on Armory Track.

As Michael Campobasso wrote down Dylan’s name as a roommate for states, he thought aloud about the good times they all had and wondered what the future would bring. After all, he is just a sophomore!

Just a sophomore!! Michael is just a sophomore!!! Michael is already ranked 20th in the state in Division 2 with his fast 1st place finish on day 1 of the State Qualifiers.

One thing is for certain, he’ll be in good company. So will Danielle. As the Kendzors, the Mannions, the Schucks, and the Apriles pass the baton to the Asaros and Campabassos, they know that they have set the stage and raised the bar for Kennedy XC and Track. They also know that the Michael and Danielle will have the likes of Anthony and Cat who have performed already like champions. The list goes on. Proper training will be key and dedication is of paramount importance to achieve even loftier goals. Good luck, Kennedy Catholic.

On the first day of the Section 1 State Qualifiers, Danielle Asaro blasted out of the blocks in the 100 meters to stardom; Michael Campobasso absolutely dominated the 110 Meter Hurdles; and Jessica Kendzor ran the fastest 800 Meter race in Kennedy Catholic school history for an unprecedented *9th School Record and her sixth consecutive state meet season. The Kennedy Catholic team looks forward to the 2nd day of events.

On May 23rd, over 500 people made the pilgrimage to Kennedy Catholic High School, to celebrate the lives of two important members of their community. The two honorees were: Sister Janet Meehan and Marc Napolitano.

Rev. Mark Vaillancourt, Ph. D., President, Principal and Mr. Alexander Malecki, Chief Advancement Officer, began the day with a mass in the auditorium in honor of former model Cross Country and Track athlete Marc Napolitano, killed in a January 10, 2010 crash upstate. Teammates, classmates, friends, and families came together to celebrate his life.

The action moved outdoors. Sister Janet Meehan was honored in word and in deed for her 50 years of service to the community. Many nuns, Kennedy faculty, former alumni, track stars that Sister coached past and present, well over a hundred current students were on hand to wish her well. This event simply further established her as a living legend.

There were over 200 active participants in the Fun Run running and field events. Nearly 100 runners entered the 5K. Cyclists led the way. Approximately 60 walkers completed 2 miles. 50 future stars (children) warmed up with the Kennedy Track team and enjoyed short runs and field events.

Keith Forlenza won the 5K event in a time of 16:50. Kennedy Captain Eric DiNome finished second with a time of 18:35.06. Jason Davin finished 1st in the under 18 class. He was 3rd overall.

Other top finishers included: 4th place - Brian Bagot (20:11.75), gold medalist in the over 50 category; 5th place – Zach Cecere (20:52.23), silver medalist in the under 18 category; 6th place – John Davin in the (20:54.16), bronze medalist in the under 18 category.

Former Kennedy runner and coach, Alicia O’Brien came back to her roots to capture a gold medal and 1st place finish among all women participants with a time of 22:30. Former Kennedy standout, Beth Mobilia, ran an outstanding 22:45 to take second among all women for the silver medal. Current Kennedy Catholic star, Jessica Kendzor, was third in a time of 23:39.

Kennedy’s Tara Cremin, Danielle Torcia, and Carolyn Grocia were 1,2, 3, gold, silver, bronze, in the under 18, female category. Tom McCabe and Christina McCabe dominated the 30-39 category for the men and women. Michael Racanello (gold), Anthony Ruvo (silver), and Mike Wynne (bronze) were the top three competitors in the men 40-49 group. Chris Hastings (27.47) finished second and Peter Healy (28:26) placed third in the men 50-60 group. Diane Thomas dominated the women 50-60 category with an excellent time of 25:39.

Team Wynne took home the majority of team/individual awards. Pat Wynne was the gold medalist in the over 60 men’s category with a superb time of 24:24. He was paced by Margaret Wynne Brennen (24:24), current Team Wynne family member. Margaret was the gold medalist for the 40-49 women’s division. Nancy Kelly (31:58) was the silver medalist in this division. Christine Juchen (33:51) was the bronze medalist. Maureen Wynne (26.37) was awarded a bronze medal in the 18-29 women’s division. Amanda Granada (24.21) also medaled (silver) in the competitive women’s 18-29, the only category in which 2 silver and 2 bronze medals were awarded for outstanding runs surpassing the standards.

Jesse Aprile won the triple jump, leaping 42-3 and also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 19-6. Dylan Schuck won the pentathlon, again this week, with his personal best score of 3,009 points.

Asaro Dashes to Gold

Kennedy’s Danielle Asaro captured the Class B sectional title in the 100-meter dash, finishing with a time of 12.4.

Kennedy took 10th with 24 points.

Kennedy’s Jessica Kendzor placed second in the 800-meter run in a time of 216.6. Kendzor teamed with Breeda Mannion, Danielle Asaro, and Catherine Kastberg to place third in 413.40.

A lot can be said for the future of Kennedy Catholic Track and Field. Several people have wondered aloud “What will happen when Dylan, Jessie, Jesse, Breeda, Eric, Alex, Brendan and the rest of our seniors are gone?” Tuesday night, that question was answered, as the Freshman and Sophomores competed at Somers. Many of the upper classmen attended the event to cheer on their younger track teammates at the Frosh/Soph Championships. It was worth the trip and the effort.

Anthony Djerdjaj worked through JFK rituals that the Kennedy boys assigned him. Coach Elliott shook his head as he asked the question “What are those guys telling Anthony to do now?” Whatever tasks were given to him, Anthony was a great sport and accomplished each & every one. Each task brought him attention. However, the most attention was given him as he won the 400-meter dash by 5 steps in a blistering 51.90. He followed that race with a 23.90 200-meter dash. Both performances earned him gold medals. “He just keeps getting better,” quipped Coach Elliott.

Michael Campobasso had no problem at all winning a gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 16.11. He was also awarded a 2nd place silver medal for his 5’6” high jump.

Megan Callaghan quietly went about her business as she threw the discus 69-0, the javelin 70-8, and the shot put 22-6, for two silver medals and a bronze medal. Her teammates Madison Evans and Emily Mittelstadt also threw well. Madison placed 4th in the discus and 7th in the shot put. Emily finished 10th in the discus.

Catherine Kastberg jumped a remarkable 30-6 in the Triple Jump. This is only her 3rd week of jumping. She won a silver medal. Catherine also won the bronze medal in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:19.80.

John Davin had a great day. He earned 2 PRs. John pole vaulted 9-0 and finished 5th. In the Long Jump, John jumped 17-2.

Zachary Cecere ran 1600 meters in the heat. According to his proud brother, Alex, Zachary withstood a pain he developed in his side to finish the race in the middle of the pack. (By the way, Alex turned in a PR of 2:11 in the 800 meters earlier in the week.)

In other notable performances during the day, Emily Mittlelstadt ran 2:49.70 in the 800 meters, Tara Gremin jumped 24-0 in the triple jump, Catherine Purdy ran 31.40 in the 200-meter dash and Shannon Spillane ran 20.70 in the 100 Meter Hurdles.

The action moved outdoors. There were opening ceremonies with the Star Spangled Banner sung. Then came a special presentation for Marc and his family from his teammates and the Kennedy Catholic community.

Next, the ever popular, Sister Janet Meehan was honored in word and in deed for her 50 years of service to the community. As Sister Janet’s achievements were announced, all present responded with warmth and affection. Sister Janet received numerous gifts and accolades as the crowd showered her with constant applause. Many nuns, Kennedy faculty, former alumni, XC and Track stars that Sister coached past and present, well over a hundred current students, so many of the Kennedy family and so many Kennedy Catholic friends were on hand to wish her well. This event simply further established her as a living legend.

Beth Mannion, organizer of the event, was pleased with the day. The crowd exceeded all expectations. Further, there were over 200 active participants in the Fun Run running and field events.

Nearly 100 runners entered the serious and not-so-serious 5K. Cyclists led the way. The roads were blocked all the way to the Golden’s Bridge train station. The Somers police and ambulance were present to ensure safety.

Approximately 60 walkers completed 2 miles. 50 future stars (children) warmed up with the Kennedy Track team and enjoyed short runs and field events. The Schuck family coordinated the events for children.

Keith Forlenza, Loyola College (Md) Cross Country and Track standout and Long Island native, won the 5K event in a time of 16:50. Keith had finished 4th in the Long Island marathon with a time of 2:34 earlier this year.

Danielle Asaro was on fire in the 100 Meter Dash, recording a 12.4 performance enroute to victory as Section 1, Class B Champion. Michael Campobasso blazed a trail of gold as he dominated the 110 Meter hurdles in 15.9. Jesse Aprile leaped to 1st place stardom with his second farthest Triple Jump of the year at 42 -3. Dylan Schuck amassed 3,2009 points to fill his pockets with more gold to win his second Pentathlon Championship.

Jessie Kendzor placed 2nd, garnered silver, gave all in an exciting, gutsy performance against XC State Champion Megan Young, who ran 2:11 (22nd fastest time out of 61,016 in the country) to win the event. Jesse Aprile brought home the Gael’s second silver medal with a second place in the Long Jump. The Kennedy girls’ 4x400 relay team members (Mannion, Kastberg, Asaro, and Kendzor) coated themselves in bronze with a 3rd place finish at 4:13.

Kennedy boys finished 6th and the girls finished 10th in the 26 team event.

TRACK- Kennedy Catholic’s Dylan Schuck was boosted by a 20-8 ½ performance in the long jump and won the pentathlon by over 300 points at the Westchester County Championships Meet at Hendrick Hudson High School on Saturday, May 15th. Schuck totaled 2,833 points to win Kennedy’s first individual county title for boys in almost 10 years.

Kennedy scored 11 points to finish 18th. Thirty-three teams scored in the meet.

Kennedy was led by Jessica Kendzor who placed 2nd in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:16.29. She also placed ninth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.53. Danielle Asaro placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.24. Asaro went on to place sixth in the 200-meter dash in a very deep field. Breeda Mannion placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 5:08.57. Mannion, Kendzor, and Asaro combined with Catherine Kastberg in the 4x400 meter relay to place fifth overall in a time of 4:11.20.

Kennedy placed 15th as a team with 16 points. Somers finished 17th with 13 points. (Post, Note: The county has a make-up of 65 school teams).

The Journal News: Kennedy Catholic Honors Nun/Coach on her 50th Anniversary

Back in the late 1960s, cheerleaders at Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers went to Sister Janet Meehan and asked her to help them form a spring track team. The art and math teacher wasn't a runner and didn't know the first thing about coaching the sport. But she was a quick study and her years of tutelage for the school’s running and track stars were under way. "They came to me I guess because I was the youngest teacher then," she said. "I learned a lot about it. I always say if you're going to do something, you have to do it right."

Meehan also started the girls' cross-country team in 1975 and the winter track team two years later and has helped coach some of the boys' teams in recent years — and she marvels at how far girls' sports have come in the decades she has spent at the school.

This year, she celebrates 50 years since entering the religious order, Sisters of Divine Compassion, and the school's athletic association will dedicate its first Fun Run to her May 23.

The coordinator, Beth Mannion of Mount Kisco, said the group opted for a fun run because it was a way to get entire families "off the couch and active" and to recognize that fitness is fun. And it was fitting to honor Meehan because of all she has meant to the school and its running program for decades, she said.
Her husband, Frank Mannion, has a generational appreciation for Meehan. He took her class for art and mechanical drawing in the early 1970s when he was a Kennedy student, and in recent years his son and daughter have competed for her in cross-country. He recalled how she provided a record player so students could listen to music in art class and often cut his and other students' hair. "She was a bit different than (the other nuns), a bit more progressive," he said. "The art room was a little haven of relaxation. You had to do the work, but it was more relaxed." He said she struck the right balance of toughness and kindness in a coach, for his son, Luke, who graduated in 2006, and his daughter, Breeda, who is a senior this year.

Meehan, 68, was glad to hear it, saying her teaching philosophy was never to spell out what students should do step by step but to "introduce them to the possibilities of what they were doing and then get out of their way."

Meehan was born in Tarrytown and raised in Hawthorne. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, she taught at Preston High School in the Bronx before her superiors sent her to Kennedy in 1967, when its new school building opened. "It was wonderful," she said. "They put me in the right place." She stopped teaching math in 1983, when the art program had expanded, and now chairs the school's Fine Arts Department.

From a coaching standpoint, she would always expect her juniors and seniors to tell her what workouts they would need. She coached "innumerable" league champions, several sectional titleholders and frequently had her top runners compete at the state and national levels. She spent 26 years as the Section I coordinator for girls' winter track until two years ago — saying she made sure to stay long enough to outlast all the coordinators who wanted to do away with the 1,500-meter walk.

The organizers of the Fun Run say they hope for more than 150 participants, including many of Meehan's former students and runners. The organizers planned the event for the end of May so that recent Kennedy graduates could come back after wrapping up their semester at college. She has maintained close ties to dozens of her runners. "Some are still my best friends," she said. "It makes it all worthwhile. I'm very proud of all my artists and my runners. I'm in it for the kids and they know it."

Jessica Kendzor of Kennedy Catholic became a member of the United States Senator’s Club (Top 100) as she ran the 99th best time in the country in the 800 Meters (2:15.07) at Loucks. This milestone occurred 5/11/10 on the US Milesplit website where over 52,000 runners across the USA were ranked.

During the winter season, Jessica ran 2:56.74 at the NYS Qualifiers in the 1000 Meters.
At the end of the 2009-2010 Indoor Track season, US Milesplit ranked her as 26th fastest in the country with this impressive time.

Jessica Kendzor sprinted down the stretch to a silver medal in the 800 Meters at the County Championships; also, she captured 2nd in the Class B 400 Meter run.

The field was loaded with top contenders. There was Shanel Golding, previous Westchester County 800 Meter Champion. There was Henrietta Miers, Section 1 Qualifier Champion & Westchester County Record Holder in the 1000 Meters. Jessica caught and passed them both along with several other excellent runners in the stretch. She finished second to Anima Banks, the current Section 1 top seed in the 800. Jessica currently has one of the fastest times in the state in the 800.

Coach Elliott, Coach Bergmeier, and Coach Mannion applauded the effort and accomplishment of the League Individual Champions. A U-Haul truck is under consideration as a means to transport the many League Champion Plaques for the winners to the annual spring Track dinner.

We always knew she could run. Then last year, we found out that she could hurdle. Lately, she’s been rumored to skip across puddles following a storm.

Today, she put it all together. Breeda was seen to run, jump, hurdle and even splish & splash through small ponds of water in Dover, New York.

All she really needed was some competition and a course. Dover and the league meet organizers provided the course. Sami Jorgenson (2nd at Loucks) of Pawling provided the competition.

The result was that the comeback kid came back today. She ran 8:02 to set a new JFK School record in the Steeplechase!

Eric DiNome led the Kennedy charge over the hurdles, through the waters, and across the track to a 3rd place finish in the League meet at Dover today. He showed good form and promise in this event.

Eric ran the fastest Steeplechase for a Kennedy Catholic boy since Luke Mannion set the record back in the day. Eric plans to run the event Thursday night in White Plains for the Westchester County Meet.

Jessie Kendzor PR’d (2:15.07), medaled (5th place), climbed the podium for recognition, and earned a coveted “Olympian” T-shirt Friday night for her effort in the 800 meter run. This is the 10th fastest time in New York State this season with 1778 times recorded to date according to Armory Track rankings. On Saturday, she ran a personal best in the 400 Meters. Her time of 59.16 earned her 16th in the race for the 35th fastest time recorded this season in New York State (1979 400 meter recorded times are listed in the Armory Track rankings). Jessie also registered a 59-second anchor leg to help the Gael’s 4x400 meter relay team (Mannion, Kastberg, Asaro, and Kendzor) to a 4:18.98 run and a 12th place finish. This is the relay team’s best time to date for the season. The time ranks Kennedy Catholic 15th in Section 1 as of 5/9/10 according to Armory Track.

For the second straight week, Dylan Schuck jumped a personal best. So did his long time friend and friendly competitor, Jesse Aprile.

Last weekend at the Somers Invitational, Dylan Schuck achieved the best long jump of his career. His long jump distance was recorded as 21-1.25, the 45th farthest long jump in New York this season. Over 1600 jumps have been recorded. This weekend at the Loucks Games, Dylan hopped, skipped, and jumped to the furthest triple jump mark of his career. His mark was 41-04.50. He finished 17th. This week, in his long jump at Loucks, Schuck’s mark of 20-1.50 was good for 18th place.

Jesse Aprile finished 16th in the triple jump at the Louck’s games with a jump of 41-07. This is his personal best. In the long jump, Aprile’s jump of 19.01 landed him in 28th place. Last week, at the Somers Invitational, Jesse had the best long jump of his career at 20-7.75. Jesse has the 74th best long jump in New York State this season.

Danielle Asaro ran 13.26 to finish 24th in the 100 meter run. Danielle recorded a 12.4 at Somers last week. This time is the 13th fastest time recorded in New York State this season (1985 times have been recorded to date by Armory Track). She also jumped 14-06 in the long jump and finished 29th in that event. Breeda Mannion ran 5:39.80 in the 1600 meter run and finished 29th. Breeda’s 5:11 in the 1500 meters at the Somers last week places her 27th this season in Section 1 at this distance according to Armory Track.

A look back at a very successful track season.

The finish line is quickly approaching for the Kennedy Catholic boys' and girls' Winter Track teams, and both certainly ran a great race! The Gael runners, jumpers, and throwers took to the track this winter with high hopes, and they did not disappoint.

The girls' track team, coached by Sister Janet Meehan, had a very successful season, and proved to be well rounded in both the distance and sprint disciplines. Looking to Seniors Jessica Kendzor and Breeda Mannion as both veteran leaders and stars of the sport, the girls' squad quickly learned that they could be a team to fear in Section 1. Jessica, coming off of an incredible Cross-Country season where she was named to the All-State Cross-Country Team, lived up to her reputation as a versatile and powerful runner. She ran with success in races of all distances ranging from 2 miles down to 300 meters. At the Westchester County Championships, Jessica broke the previous school record in the 300 meter race (43.51) with a time of 43.05. Breeda continued her comeback from injury during the fall season, and she finished the winter track season with strong performances in the 1500 meter race at both the County and Sectional Championship meets.

For the girls, Junior sprinter Danielle Asaro also had a very impressive season. Danielle placed first in the 55 meter dash at Sectional Championships and, along with Mannion, Kendzor, and Sophomore Katherine Kastberg, she played an important role in the girls' 4x400 meter relay team throughout the season.
The girls' team placed 2nd in the league and captured 3rd place at the Class C County Meet. It was an overall very impressive season for the Lady Gaels runners!

The boys' team, coached by Mr. Larry Elliot and Mr. Jacob Bergmeier, followed this trend of success. With a team composed mainly of Senior athletes, the boys entered the season with many goals and ambitions.

Seniors Jesse Aprile and Dylan Schuck led the team in both the jumping and sprinting events. Both lit up the jumping pit, flying well over 19 feet in the long jump and 40 feet in the triple-jump competitions throughout the season. The two leaders also tore up the track in the sprint events, Aprile in the 55 meter dash and Schuck in the 55 meter hurtles. Meanwhile, Sophomores Liam Perry and Michael Campobasso followed in the foot- steps of the Senior athletes; Perry had success in the long and the triple-jump, while Campobasso performed very well in the high jump, pole vault, and 55 meter hurtles events.

The distance runners on the Kennedy boys' team also found success on the track. Eric DiNome improved his 1 Mile Run time from 5:25 to 5:00. Seniors Alex Cecere and Dan Calapai fired up the middle distance races -- Cecere in the 1000 meters and Calapai in the 600 meters. DiNome and Cecere also teamed with sprinters Dylan Schuck and Liam Perry at the end of the season to compete in the 4x400 meter relay, living up to all expectations at the Sectional Meet.

The boys' team won the league championship for the second consecutive winter season. It also placed 6th out of 18 teams at the Westchester County Championships.

As successful as both the girls' and boys' teams were this winter, their success did not come without a great loss. The team, along with the entire Kennedy Catholic family, mourned the loss of former student, track runner and friend, Marc Napolitano. The team dedicated their championship season to Marc.

A couple of footnotes to close out this report of the successful Winter Track season: The
Gael harriers will be competing on Saturday, February 27, in the State Qualifiers; we are hoping to send multiple runners to the State Championships, which will be held at Cornell University on March 6. Finally, Jessica Kendzor has been invited to compete in the Disney World Invitational track meet in mid-March; Jess is scheduled to run in the mile, the 1000 meters and the 300 meters. Athletes from 52 Teams competed in the 2010 Somers Lions Club Invitational. The runners, jumpers, hurdlers, and throwers competed in mixed competition and were scored in overall competition and in class (A, B, and C size schools) competition.

In Class B, The Kennedy Catholic girls placed third in the 12-plus-team field. Jessica Kendzor led the way for the Gaels with a 2nd place finish overall (52-team field) in the 800 Meter run with a time of 2:18.7; she finished 1st in Class B. This was Jessica’s best 800 Meters of the 2010 spring season. Danielle Asaro broke the JFK school record in the 100 Meters with a time of 12.4. She finished tied for 4th overall and first in Class B. Breeda Mannion captured 1st place in Class B for the 1500 Meter run. The Kennedy Girls’ 4 x 400 Meter Relay team (Mannion, Kastberg, Asaro, and Kendzor) won 1st place in Class B. Tara Cremin placed 3rd in the Varsity Girls 400 Meter Hurdles. Catherine Kastberg was 4th in the Class B varsity girls 400 Meter dash. The varsity girls’ team of Kastberg and Cremin placed 5th in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay finals.

The Kennedy Catholic boys finished 8th in the 13 team Class B field. Dylan Schuck won the Class B Pentathalon. Dylan was 4th overall. Jesse Aprile placed 2nd in Class B in the Triple Jump with a mark of 41-3.5. He also placed third in the Class B long jump with a personal best of 20-7.75. Jesse was 5th overall in both jumps. Eric DiNome placed 3rd in the Class B one-mile run with a time of 4:58, a personal best. The Kennedy Catholic Varsity Boys 1600 Meter Sprint Medley Relay placed 5th in Class B. The Varsity boys 4 x 200 Meter Relay Team finished 5th in Class B. Other notable performances included: Anthony Djerdjaj ran a 55.70 time in the 400 meters dash. He finished 36th in the large field of runners. Alex Cecere ran 2:13 in the 800 Meters to finish 44th in a field of 111 runners.

Jesse Aprile, Dylan Shuck, and Brett Lounsbury won the long jump relay with a two-man team total of 40-4-1/2. Jason Davin, Louis Fusco, and Schuck won the 400 intermediate hurdle relay with a two-man team time of 2:08.0.

Nine Kennedy Catholic Girls Medal; Cremin, Purdy, Asaro, & Kendzor Run the 7th Fastest SMR for NYS Class B Schools to Date / Capture Gold at the 38th Annual Croton Girls Relays

Jessica Kendzor ran a 2:18 800-meter anchor split against her friend, state qualifier, and roommate at states, senior Anne Fields, Irvington High School, to help the JFK relay team to a 1st place finish at the 38th Annual Croton Girls Relays. Newcomers to JFK’s relay, Tara Cremin ran the 1st leg (200 Meters) and Catherine Purdy ran the 2nd leg (200 Meters). Both ran PRs. JFK speedster Danielle Asaro sprinted 400 meters & placed the team within striking distance of winning the event. Jessica Kendzor sailed to the finish line. The girl’s 4 x 400 meters relay team consisting of Tara Cremin, Emily Thomas, Danielle Asaro, and Jessica Kendzor finished in 3rd place for bronze medals with a combined effort of 4:32.6. In the 4 x 100 meters relay, the JFK Catholic girls team (Cat Purdy, Shannon Spillane, Emily Thomas, and Jessica Kendzor) ran a combined 57.4 to medal and place 4th. Kerry Ford showed her versatility and team commitment by stepping in last minute to join Tara Cremin in the 400 hurdle relay. Tara ran 1:22 and Kerry ran 1:34 for a combined effort of 2:56.

In the field events, Danielle Asaro (14’ 7 ½”) and Stephanie Prestamo (12’ 1”) combined their distances (26-8.5) to take a 3rd place bronze medal in the long jump relay. Throwers Meghan Callaghan and Madison Evans had a good day. Together, they took a 1st place ribbon in the JV shot put relay, which equated to the 5th farthest throw in the varsity division. Meghan had her personal best with a throw of 23 feet. Madison threw 20 feet 11 inches. They also combined distances and were awarded medals for 5th place in the varsity discus relay. Meghan threw 64’10” and Madison threw 51’ 11” in the girls’ dual effort in the discus event. In the triple jump, Stephanie Prestamo jumped a PR triple jump 25’1&3/4” and Kerry Ford PR’d & jumped 22’11” in the triple jump for a combined effort over 48 feet.

At the first ever Ossining Relays… Kennedy’s Jesse Aprile had the top individual long jump with a distance of 19-6. He also had the second best triple jump of the day at 39-11.

Also at Ossining, Kennedy Catholic won the 4 x 400 meter relay with a team of Danielle Asaro, Breeda Mannion, Catherine Kastberg, and Jessica Kendzor in a time of 1:54.57. The same foursome also won the sprint medley in a time of 4:28.88. Kennedy posted a third win in the long jump relay with Danielle Asaro (15-1 ½) and Stephanie Prestamo (12-10) posting a team distance of 27-11 ½.

KC Girls Track Team Topple North Salem & Haldane; KC Boys Beat Haldane, But Fall Victim to North Salem in Dual Meet Activity

Breeda Mannion ran 4 events. She won 1st place in the 3200 Meters & the 1500 Meters. She also ran legs in the 4x400 Meter Relay team and the 4x100 Meter Relay teams in their victories. Jessie Kendzor tied the JFK 200-Meter school record with a 26.67 performance at North Salem in this tri-meet held on Tuesday night. This is the 8th school record that Kendzor owns. She followed the 200 Meters with a victory in the 800 Meters. Jessie also anchored the 4 x 100 Meter relay team to a 1st place finish. Danielle Asaro was 1st in the 100 Meters. Danielle played an integral part of the victorious 4x100 Meters, and scored points in the jumps. Emily Thomas showed her versatility, scoring points as a sprinter and long distance runner. Coach Elliott dubbed Catherine Kastberg the team’s 400-meter competitor. She can expect to run and hurdle in events of that length. She won the 400 meters and was 2nd in the hurdle event. Catherine was a member of the victorious relay teams as well. Kerry Ford, Katie & Emily Mittlestadt and Kat Purdy added much needed depth in the jumping, running and hurdle events & scored points for the fighting Gaels. Madison Evans provided points in the shot put and discus field events for the team.

Aprile, Cecere, and Schuck led the Kennedy Catholic boys. Dylan Schuck jumped 5’8” in the high jump and threw the shot put over 35 feet. Both are PRs for the senior. Jesse Aprile jumped over 40 feet in the Triple Jump for the first time this season. He and Coach Bergmeier were delighted that he was over 40 feet at this time during the season. Schuck and Aprile won their respective events. Alex Cecere aced the 400 meters. He showed that he is capable of scoring in both distance and sprint races for the team. Matt Eliseo, John & Jason Davin, Louis Fusco, Zachary Cecere, and Brett Loungbury had excellent performances & ran and jumped to add points to the Gael’s total.

Gold Medalists - Kendzor, Asaro, Mannion, Kastberg, Prestamo, & Aprile Lead the JFK Gaels at the Ossining Invitational

1st Place Medalists - Kendzor, Asaro, Mannion, Kastberg, Prestamo and Aprile led the Gaels to a strong showing at the Inaugural Ossining Invitational Relays. Kennedy Catholic’s versatile Track and Field teams (runners, jumpers and throwers) scored a bundle of points throughout the day.

Kendzor ran a 26+, Asaro a 27+, and Kastberg and Mannion ran 30+ legs in the 4x200 Relay. The result was a 1st place in a field of 14 teams. Their time was 1:54.57, 2 seconds off the JFK Catholic school record. It was the 1st time the girls tried this event. The same 4 girls also won first place in the 9-team Sprint Medley field. Their time was an excellent 4:28.88. This was also the first time the girls tried this event as a team.

Aprile and Asaro had the best long jumps of the day for the boys and girls, respectively. Prestamo had the 4th best long jump for the girls. Together, Asaro and Prestamo won the Long Jump Relay Final. Prestamo (5th) and Ford (6th) placed 2nd in the Triple Jump Relay finals. Aprile and J. Davin placed 2nd as a Triple Jump team for the boys. Aprile and Loungbury placed 2nd as a team in the boys Long Jump. In the Varsity Boys High Jump Relay Final, JFK’s J. Davin and B. Loungbury combined to take second place. Davin had the third highest jump and Loungbury had the 5th highest jump.

In the Varsity Girls Discus Throw Relay finals, Callaghan and Evans combined throws to capture 3rd place. Callaghan had the 2nd farthest throw of the day. In the Varsity Girls Shot Put Relay Finals, the JFK team of Evans and Callaghan finished 4th.

JFK Catholic also placed 4th in the Varsity Girls 300 Meter Shuttle Hurdle Race.

The JFK Observer, Armory Track: Schuck, Aprile, Campabasso, Callaghan, Davin Shine Brightly at Twilight To Lead Kennedy Catholic

First Place finishers --- Schuck, Aprile, Campabasso, Callaghan, & John Davin did shine brightly at Twilight To lead Kennedy Catholic's Track teams at Somers this past week. Danielle Asaro garnered 3 silver medals and she proved that she could jump as well as run. Breeda Mannion led the 4 x400 Meter relay team to a second place finish. Though her time was not recorded on the Armory site, she also ran a competitive mile run. Eric DiNome ran a noble mile for the boys to place fifth in his varsity event. Anthony Djerdjaj ran a fast 57.40 in the 400 Meters to place 2nd in the sophomore event. The boys' 4x400 Meter team placed 5th in their event. Evans, Ford, Frimpong, Lounsbury, Fusco, Healy, Johnson, Kastberg, E. Mittlestadt, Spillane and Teague were among other top 5 finishers for Kennedy Catholic in their respective events.

Kennedy Catholic's Jessica Kendzor had two first-place finishes at the 2010 Walt Disney World Invitational at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. from March 18-20.

Kendzor finished with a time of 2:20 in the 800-meters for her first gold medal.

She then followed that up with a time of 59.87 in the 400-meter dash for her second gold medal. She also broke a Kennedy school record in the process.

Dreams Come True at Walt Disney World Invitational; Kendzor - 2 Golds at ESPN's Wide World of Sports

Dreams do come true! During the 2010 Walt Disney World Invitational, JFK's Jessica Kendzor captured 2 gold medals at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. This exciting nationally sanctioned event took place over 3 days from March 18th through March 20th.

After a night of cross-cultural dining and fireworks at Epcot Center, Kennedy Catholic's Kendzor entered the ESPN complex and proceeded to ru n a smart race in the 800 Meter run. Jessica stayed in 2nd place for the first lap behind the front runner, who hailed from Nova Scotia. When a runner from Brearley, NY, NY, passed them both, Jessica followed her instincts and her dreams. She outkicked the fast Brearley girl to win the event and a gold medal with a time of 2:20. Next, in the 400 Meter dash, Jessica ran the best time of the day in the preliminaries. Later, she headed for the Magic Kingdom for some good 'ol fashioned fun and dreamed a little more.

The next day, after a dip in Typhoon Lagoon, Jessica returned and prepared to run a fast race from start to finish. She knew she would have to run her best in this fast field of runners, which included Kayla Leahey (one of NY's best runners & pole vaulters), from Warwick Valley, New York. Jessica weathered the 84 degree Florida heat and sliced through the strong March wind, which nearly stopped a number of runners in their tracks. The result was a 59.87 400 Meter dash, a second Gold medal, and her 7th JFK School Record.

Chuck Slater, North County News: A Record Senior Season for Kennedy Catholic’s Kendzor

As she entered high school, Jessica Kendzor told her dad, Peter, she wanted to take running seriously. For inspiration and incentive, Peter Kendzor told his daughter that he had set eight school records in high school and college.

Now she is a senior, and the Kennedy middle-distance star is going after school records – and her dad’s record total.

The runner already has six spots on the Gael’s record book. She owns the Catholic school’s mark in the 300-meter dash (43.05 seconds), at the 1,000 yards (2:43.40), at 1,200 meters (3:57) and was part of two record 4 by 400 relays indoor and out. Then, less than two weeks ago, she obliterated her 3:04 mark for the 1,000 meters with a 2:56.5 runner-up finish in the state-qualifier meet.

The emphatic record-lowering also put her in the A race at the distance in the state championships last Saturday, while giving her then the 10th fastest time in the state this winter.

And the record-busting race will continue when the outdoor season starts. She has a personal best of 2:15.35 for 800-meters; the school’s standard is an accessible 2:14.8.

I’m also going to do the 400 outdoors and maybe the 200,” she said.

Then it will be onto Lehigh University on an alumni grant (track) scholarship on a track to continue the quest for fast times.

“I’d like to get eight records – or as many as possible,” Jessica Kendzor said.

In the A race at Cornell on Saturday, Kendzor followed a too-fast early pace against the state’s top runners and finished well back and well over three minutes. It was however, her fifth straight running season qualifying for state competition: cross-country, indoors and outdoors as a junior and cross-country and now indoors this school year.

It might have been more except her first two years at Kennedy, Kendzor was slowed by freak injuries like stepping in potholes on the course. Now she is running past a very solid junior year.

“Yes, I’m a better runner now,” she said. “This year I have the mentality that this is my final year here and I want to make Sister proud.

Sister is Sister Janet Meehan, the legendary, long-time, and much-beloved cross-country and track coach at Kennedy. It was she who first recognized the talent in Kendzor and her friend Breeda Mannion when she put them on varsity after the two freshmen’s first day of cross-country tryouts. Both finished in the top five in every race. This fall, Kendzor won the Brewster Invitational and Class B cross-country meets.

“Make me proud? She’s already done that,” Sister Janet said. “Besides being a very fine young lady, she’s finally begun to believe in herself as a runner. She used to think everyone else was better. Now that she proved it isn’t so, there’s no stopping her.”

It seemed that way at the state qualifier at the New York Armory at the end of February. Strategizing perfectly, Kendzor stayed in second behind the swift pace of Tappan Zee’s Caile Kohlbrenner; then when favored Henrietta Miers of Bronxville sprinted to the lead late in the race, Kendzor followed her for a fast and comfortable second place.

She did not plan as well at the state meet. “I went out too fast at the start,” she said.

Sister Janet is Kendzor’s coach in the fall and winter, but Larry Elliott, who coaches only the boys in the winter, coaches both squads in the spring. He, too, notices the improvement in Kendzor.

“It’s physical maturity (Kendzor turned 18 in December) and consistent training,” Elliott said. “She realizes training is the key to success.”

And also staying out of potholes.

“Sister kids me about that,” Kendzor said with a laugh.

Another key is a group of special running partners with which Kendzor is close. Older sister Tina is a cross-country runner at PACE College and works with Jessica when available. Mannion, her long-time running mate, kept at it with her friend even when she didn’t make states so her season was over. And her boyfriend is Eric DiNome, a 5-minute miler on the Kennedy Catholic’s boys’ team.

“He runs with me to work on speed,” Kendzor said.

And always there for moral support is the owner of the record Jessica Kendzor would like to eclipse. Peter Kendzor never misses one of her competitions.

How will he feel when his record topples?

“Proud,” he said. “The sooner the better.”

Coach Elliott Entertained the Troops; Kendzor, Aprile, Asaro, and Perry Take Home Coveted Awards

Coach Elliott entertained the troops with his Top 10. Jessie Kendzor and Jesse Aprile were crowned MVPs. Danielle Asaro and Liam Perry were given the Most Improved Athlete awards. Many individual (Aprile, Asaro, Kendzor, Schuck, Mannion, Campobasso, Ahearn, Mittelstadt, Kastberg, and Rodriguez) All-League plaques (too numerous to mention, without forgetting someone) were awarded. The boys were honored for winning their Winter Track League Championship. Zach Cecere and Breeda Mannion won the 2nd Tri-annual Couples Award following the original winning team of Eric DiNome and Jessica Kendzor. Coach Elliot, Coach Bergmeier, and Coach Sister Janet Meehan received gifts and recognition. Fine food and ample laughter were plentiful at JFK's Winter Track Dinner.

Kendzor Thanks Supporters at States; Sets Sights on the Walt Disney World Invitational

A week before, Jessie had missed the all-time Westchester County record in the 1000 Meters by one and a half seconds. She ran a 2:56. During the week, she was named to the Westchester All-County team. In the last three State championships, Jess had great days. A year ago she medaled in States and Federations in the Distance Medley. Last spring, she was 2nd in the 800 Meters in the NYSPHSAA State Championships. A couple months ago, Jessie finished 10th at the NYS Cross Country Championships. But Saturday was not her day. She ran a 3:09. Still, at the end of the official New York State Winter season, she finished the year with the 12th fastest 1000 Meter time on record in all of New York State high school athletics.

Jessie held her head high and thanked her supporters who made the trip to states at Cornell. She thanked Coach Sister Janet Meehan, Coach Jake Bergmeier, Greg DiNome, Eric DiNome, and her Dad for making the trip to cheer for her. Her sister, Tina, who was to run at the Armory for PACE on Saturday, rushed to meet her at home on Saturday night to give her hugs. Renoun writer, Chuck Slater, called and made Jessie feel better about things. He plans to feature Jessie ("one of his favorite people") in an upcoming article in the North County News. Jessie realized that her support runs deep.

Jessie took a deep breath and now set her sights on the Walt Disney World Invitational, March 18th-20th. She has been invited to run in this event by Michael Caine, the event organizer, who waived event fees and who normally restricts entry to the event to full school teams. This is a nationally-sanctioned Invitational. Good luck Jessie!

Kennedy’s Jessica Kendzor also ran her best time ever with a time of 2:56.72. She went out fast and had an excellent finish to place a strong second, which earned her a second straight trip to Cornell. The senior is ranked 10th in the state. Gael Danielle Asaro took sixth in the 55-meter dash. Asaro posted a very fast time of 7.53 in the trials and a clocking of 7.61 in the finals.

JFK’s Kendzor, Asaro, Schuck, Mannion, Aprile, & Kastberg Competed in Highly Selective NYS Qualifier

Race-Walk League Champion Katie Mittelstadt raised the well-designed sign & led the cheers as select JFK stars competed at the NYC Armory on Saturday night. The Kennedy athletes had qualified to compete in the State qualifier. To qualify, an athlete had to be one of the top 18 seeds in the Section 1.

Coach Meehan, Coach Bergmeier, and Coach Elliot entered their fair share of competitors. JFK was well represented this year. The prize was the opportunity to compete at Cornell in the NYS Championships. For the most part, only the 1st Place and 2nd Place finishers go to the State meet; there are no classes or divisions – athletes compete against each other from over 60 schools in Section 1.

Jessica Kendzor succeeded in the task. She is headed to NYS championships for the 5th consecutive Track season. Jessica smashed the Kennedy Catholic 1000 Meter school record by over 5 seconds with a 2:56.72. This is the 7th fastest time in New York State this season.

Danielle Asaro finished in the #6 spot of the 55 Meter dash. She ran her personal best time. That time was the 4th best time for the Preliminary races. Her PR time was a blazing 7.53.

Dylan Schuck placed 7th in the Long Jump at 19-10. This was a new season best for Dylan. Dylan also finished as the 16th best 55 Meter hurdler in Section 1. His time was 8.52, a personal best.

Jesse Aprile was 11th in the Long Jump. His jump was 19-2.75. Jesse finished 17th in the Triple Jump at 38-7.

Breeda Mannion finished 11th in the 1500 meter race to conclude her comeback Winter Season on a positive note.

The JFK Girls Varsity 4 x 400 Meter relay team ran 4:19.42. This was good for 10th place at the event. The team consists of Breeda Mannion, Catherine Kastberg, Danielle Asaro, and Jessica Kendzor. This relay team now looks forward to the Spring Track season.

Kendzor, Aprile Medal 3 Times; Asaro (2 Medals) & Schuck Strike Gold; Mannion drapes herself in Silver + Bronze; Mannion, Kastberg, Asaro, & Kendzor Break the JFK Indoor Track 4x400 School Record To Capture a Silver Medal at the Championship meet.

The Kennedy Winter Track and Field stars were out in full force Sunday night in NYC at the Armory Track for the Sectional Championships as the JFK Catholic Girls Placed 5th in a 17 Team Field and the JFK Boys Finished 6th in an 18 team field.

Danielle Asaro tore up the resurfaced Armory Track with a 7.58 55 Meter Dash 1st place, Gold medal performance. She was also an integral part of the Silver medal, award-winning 4 x 400 Meter Relay team. Danielle is the Section 1, Class B, 55 Meter Champion.

Dylan Schuck jumped to 1st place Gold and Glory with a 19-8.25 Long Jump. Dylan is the Section 1, Class B, Long Jump Champion.

Jess Kendzor displayed her versatility as she ran 3:04.50 in the 1000 Meter for a Silver medal & finish 2nd to New York State XC Champion, Megan Young. Jessica ran faster as the night continued, sprinting 43.14 in the 300 Meter Dash to place 3rd for a Bronze medal in that event. In addition, several coaches clocked her at 59 seconds as anchor leg for the 4 x 400 M Relay team, which garnered a Silver medal. Jess, top point scorer for the JFK girls, left the Armory with 3 medals for the night.

Jesse Aprile ran and jumped to 3 medals for the Gaels in stunning fashion. Jesse sprinted to a 6.86 55 Meter Dash to decorate himself in Bronze. Between sprints, he jumped to a Bronze medal in the Long Jump at 19-3. With 2 medals in his pockets, he excelled in the Triple Jump with a 40-4.5 mark, to place a 3rd medal in his pockets. Jesse was top point scorer for the boys.

Breeda Mannion shaved 15 more seconds off her Westchester County Championship performance in her comeback bid as she captured Bronze in the highly competitive 1500 Meter run that included the aforementioned Young and Nicki Nesi (Journal News – Runner of the Year). Breeda led off the 4 x 400 Meter Relay team that was awarded a silver medal.

In the 4 x400 Meter Relay, the JFK girls team ran 4:15.20 to set a new JFK Indoor Track 4 x 400 Meter School Record. The record-setting team consists of Breeda Mannion, Katherine Kastberg, Danielle Asaro and Jess Kendzor.

Other notable performances were… Dylan Schuck (55 Meter Hurdles – 4th in a field of 20), Liam Perry (Triple Jump - 11th in a field of 30) Eric DiNome (1600 Meters - 13th in a field of 38), Alex Cecere (1000 Meters - 18th in a field of 50), the JFK Boys 4x400 Meter Relay team (Cecere, DiNome, Perry, and Schuck – 7th Place), and Katherine Kastberg (55 Meters - 20th in a field of 40)… in this meet of invited, qualified champions.

Westchester County Championships

Kennedy Catholic’s Dylan Schuck won the 55-meter hurdles at 8.76 and placed 11th overall. Jessie Aprile took sixth overall and 3rd in Class C in the 55-meter dash at 6.80. Aprile was also third overall with an excellent leap of 20-3 in the long jump, which also earned him a silver medal in Class C. Aprile placed fifth overall and second in Class C in the triple jump with a distance of 40-8. The Gaels placed 15th as a team and ninth in Class C.

Kennedy Catholic’s Jessica Kendzor placed second in the 1,000 at 3:05.0. Kendzor also placed ninth overall and third in Class C in the 300 with a school-record time of 43.05. Danielle Asaro placed sixth overall and second in Class C in the 55-meter dash at 7.65. Breeda Mannion, coming back from injuries, placed ninth overall and second in Class C in the 1500 with a solid time of 5:14.40. Kennedy placed 15th overall as a team and third in the Class C division.

Jesse Aprile & Jessie Kendzor Earn 3 Medals Each To Lead JFK at Westchester County Championships

Jesse Aprile placed 3rd in the Long Jump with a jump of 20-3, 5th in the Triple Jump (40-8), and 6th in the 55 Meter Dash (6.8) to lead the JFK boys at The Westchester County Meet. Eric DiNome PR’d and medaled at 5:00.80 minutes in the 1600 Meters. Dylan Schuck turned in strong performances in the Long Jump (7th – 19-6.75), 55M Hurdles (8.76 – 11th place), Triple jump (15th – 38-7.5).

Jessica Kendzor placed 2nd in the 1000 Meter Run and anchored the 4x400 Meter Relay team (Mannion, Katsberg, Asaro, and Kendzor) to a 5th place finish. She also broke the JFK school record in the 300M to earn her 3rd medal. Her time was 43.05, breaking the previous JFK school record (43.51) that she set last season at the Armory KickOff. Danielle Asaro and Breeda Mannion turned in strong performances. Danielle finished 6th in the 55 Meters (7.65) and 12th in the 300 Meters (43.99). Breeda knocked another 10 seconds off her comeback time in the 1500 Meter Race and ran a 5:14.40 to finish 9th.

The girls captured 3rd place in a field of 12 Class C teams. The boys finished 5th in a field of 11 Class C teams.

Kennedy Catholic captured the League 1-D Title at the 168th Street Armory on Sunday over Pawling, 171-150. Jesse Aprile led the way, winning the 55-meter dash (6.8), the long jump at 19-7 ½ and the triple jump at 41-5. Michael Campobasso won the pole vault (10 feet) and the high jump at 5-6. Campobasso also placed second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.9) behind teammate Dylan Schuck, who won with a time of 8.3. Schuck also placed second in the long jump (19-1/4) and high jump (5-2). Andrew Rodriguez won the shot put with a distance of 33-1 ½. Liam Perry took second in the triple jump at 38-7 ¼ and third in the long jump at 17-7.

Kennedy Catholic’s Danielle Asaro won the 55-meter dash (7.4) and the 300 (43.60). She also teamed with Katherine Kastberg, Breeda Mannion, and Jessica Kendzor to win the 4x400 relay (4:22.9). Kendzor also won the 1000 (3.07.7) and took third in the 3000 (11.23.1). Kathryn Ahearn won the long jump (11-7 ¾) and took second in the triple jump (24-6 ½). Mannion placed fourth in the 1,500 (5:27.2). Kennedy placed second as a team behind Pawling.

Sister Janet entered her top senior runners in the Yale Classic in New Haven on Saturday. Jessica Kendzor ran her first 1 mile race and finished with a US Milesplit Elite time of 5:21.01. Breeda Mannion continued her comeback. She ran the 800 Meters for the 1st time this season and finished with a time of 2:33.23.

Kennedy Catholic’s Jesse Aprile placed sixth in the 55 Meter dash with a time 6.8. Aprile also placed sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 39-1/2. He finished the evening with a ninth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-9. Teammate Dylan Schuck qualified for the finals and placed sixth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.8.

In the Dendy One Meet, Kennedy’s Michael Campobasso ran a time of 8.1 in the 55 meter hurdles to place 2nd.. Campobasso also placed third in the high jump at 5-4. Teammate Liam Perry placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 36-5 ½.

Kennedy Catholic’s Jessica Kendzor took third (2:43.4) in the 1000 Yard Run at the Rockland Invitational.

At Dendy, Kennedy’s Breeda Mannion placed sixth at 5:35 in the 1500.

The JFK Catholic Boys were heard to sing a chorus of "We are the Champions" as they claimed the Winter Track League Championship at the Armory in NY, NY last night. For the boys, Aprile, Campobasso, and Schuck led the way in the field, and in the dashes. Andrew Rodriguez helped the team with a first place throw in the shot put. Eric DiNome PR'd in the 1500 for the second time in a week. He and Dan Calapai fired up the middle distance relay teams. For the girls, Danielle Asaro led the way with first place medals in the 55 Meters and the 300 Meters. Kathryn Ahearn won the Long Jump. Jessica Kendzor repeated as 1000 Meter League Champion and scored 6 team points in her first 3000 Meter run in a strong field of runners. She also anchored the 4x400 Meter relay team to a remarkable, dominating 1st place performance. Breeda Mannion shaved another 10 seconds off her 1500 Meter time as she continues her comeback. Breeda ran the 1st leg of the 4x400 Meter relay and handed the baton to Katherine Kastberg, who maintained the substantial lead that Breeda had opened. Katherine handed the baton to Danielle Asaro who widened the lead. Danielle passed the baton to Jessie Kendzor who blew the field away. It wasn't even close.

Daniel Calapai ran 58.8 to finish 4th in the 400 Meter run out of 98 participants. Eric DiNome ran a 5:07 (PR) to place 7th (in a field of 100 racers) in the 1600 Meters. DiNome also ran the first and fastest leg of JFK’s 4 x 400 Meter Relay team, which ran a 4:06, good for 15th out of 58 teams. Alex Cecere ran 2:22 in the 800-meter race to place 37th in the field of 132 runners. Brenda Page finished (58th) in the upper half of the competition in the same race. Zachary Cecere finished 16th in the 3200 Meter run.

In the boy’s field events, Michael Campobasso ran 8.10 to place 2nd in the 55 Meter Hurdles. Michael high-jumped 5-4 for a 3rd place. He also pole vaulted 9-0 to finish 8th in a field of 29 competitors. Liam Perry jumped 18-0.25 to place 4th in the Long Jump. There were 45 competitors. John Davin jumped 16, good for 14th. Liam Perry also placed 3rd in the Triple Jump. He jumped 36-5.5. Jason Davin was 13th with a jump of 32-9.5.

Asaro Stars at Donny Dendy #1; Breeda Mannion is on the Comeback Trail

Danielle Asaro ran 1:09.40 to take 2nd place in the 400 Meter run. She also ran 27.80 and tied for 2nd in the 200 Meters. After tackling some health issues, Breeda Mannion is now on the comeback trail. She finished 6th in the 1500 Meter Run in a field of 62 runners. Katie Mittlestadt ran 2:53 and Emily Middlestadt ran 2:57 to finish 17th and 20th respectively in the 42 runner field of the 800 Meter Run.

In the girl’s field events, JFK’s Kathryn Ahearn led the JFK girls. She finished 15th best with a jump of 25-3.

Dylan Schuck finished 2nd in the Varsity Boys 55 Meter hurdles. J. Davin ran 10:30 and finished in 10th in the same race.

In the Varsity boys 1600 Meter Run, Eric DiNome ran 5:08 to place 10th, Alex Cecere ran 5:22 to finish 15th, and Brendan Page crossed the line 21st with a time of 5:34. Zach Cecere ran 5:48 in the Sophomore Boys 1600 Meter Run to finish in 18th place.

In the 600 Meter Run, for the JFK boys, Fusco finished 10th. His time was 1:38.50. Eric DiNome placed 14th with a time of 1:42.80. Dan Calapai ran 1:43.70 for 17th place.

In the Varsity Boys 300 Meter Run, Liam Perry ran 40.90 for the Gaels to finish 14th. In the Junior Year Boys 300 Meters, Zachary Furman ran 42.10, which was good for 8th place. Empson ran 45.10 to finish 16th. John Davin ran 43.40 to place 5th in the Freshman Boys 300 Meter Dash. A 48.10 time and 28th place finish was recorded for Empson in the same race.

JFK Sprinters ran 2 teams in the 4 x 200 Relays. JFK’s Team A ran 143.50 for a fifth place finish. JFK’s Team B ran 1:48.80 to place 10th.

In the Sophomore Boys Shot Put, Andrew Rodriguez threw 23-5.5 for a 20th place finish.

Emily Mittlestadt ran 2:00.90 to take 10th place in the Freshman Girls 600 Meter Run. Katie Mittlestadt ran 2:01.10 and came in 15th in the Varsity Girls 600 Meter Run.

Danielle Asaro ran 45.60 in the 300 Meter Run to finish in 5th place. Kathryn Ahearn ran 55.20 to finish 17th and Emily Mittlestadt ran 58.90 to come in the 24th spot.

Moria Tolan ran 50.10 in the Sophomore Girls 300 Meter Dash for 9th place.

Kathryn Ahearn ran a 1:05.50 in the Freshman Girls 300 to take 16th place.

In the Varsity Girls 4 x 200 Meter Relays, the JFK Catholic team ran 2:13.10 to finish in 11th place.

Regarding team scoring, JFK Varsity boys finished ahead of Fordham Prep, Stepinac, Kellenberg and St. Raymond’s. JFK Sophomore boys finished ahead of Bishop Loughlin, All Hallows, Bronxville, Lehman, and Stepinac.

Michael Campobasso ran 8.6 to win the 55 Meter Hurdles. Congrats Michael!

Martin Durkin ran 1:55.80 to place 33rd in the 600 Meters.

In the Varsity boys distance races, Zach Cecere finished 23rd in the 3200 Meter Run with a time of 12:31.60. He also ran 5:55.80 in the 1600 Meter Run, to finish in 46th place.

In the Varsity Boys Long Jump, John Davin jumped 16-10.5 to finish 9th. Ryan Epsom recorded a jump of 14-6.5 to place 23rd.err

Liam Perry's 4-10 high jump was good for a tie for sixth.

Andrew Rodriguez pole vaulted 32-11.25 and finished 9th in the competition of 57 vaulters.

In the Varsity Girls 4x200 Meter Relays, the JFK girls ran 2:10.40 to finish 9th.

Michael Campobasso of Kennedy Catholic placed 5th in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 8.61. Campobasso also cleared 5-3 in the high jump for 11th. Jesse Aprile placed 10th in the 55-meter dash and came back to place 6th in the triple jump at 40-2 ¼. Dylan Schuck leaped 18-5 ½ in the long jump to place sixth and Liam Perry finished seventh at 18-4 ¾.

Girls

Jessica Kendzor of Kennedy Catholic placed second (3:06.5) in the 1,000 meter run to Bronxville’s Meredith Rizzo, missing the win by just .2 seconds. Kendzor came back in the 1,500 to place third at 5:10.3. Danielle Asaro finished fifth in the 300 in a time of 44.79.

Track Teams Kick-Off the Winter Season at the Armory

At the Armory Kick-off, Jessica Kendzor ran 3:06 and finished second in the 1000 Meters. Approximately 1 hour later, she ran a 5:10 in the 1500 Meters to place 3rd. Danielle Asaro finished 5th in the 300 Meters with a time of 44.79.

For the boys, Michael Campobasso ran 8.61 to finish 5th in the 55 Meter hurdles. Dylan Schuck jumped 18-5 to place 6th and Liam Perry followed at 7th in the Long Jump with a jump of 18-4.75. Jesse Aprile was 6th in the Triple Jump with a jump of 40-2.25.

The boys 4 x 800 team ran an exciting race that had the Kennedy fans on their feet. Eric DiNome, Alex Cecere, Brendan Page, and Dan Calapai battled their way to a 4th place finish in their heat.

Kennedy Catholic - Key Returnees are Jesse Aprile, Michael Campobasso, Alex Cecere, Liam Perry, and Dylan Schuck.

Key newcomers are John Davin, Eric DiNome and Zach Furman.

The Gaels will be very strong in the field events and sprints, led by Schuck, Aprile, and Campobasso.

Girls

Key returnees are Danielle Asaro, Sarah DiNome, Kelly Ford, Doran Hastings, Jessica Kendzor, Breeda Mannion, April Mante, and Katie Middlestadt.

Key newcomers are Kathryn Ahearn, Doran Hastings, Cat Kastberg, and Moira Tolan.

Kendzor will be one of the best middle distance runners in the section and will be in the mix to qualify for states in the 1,500.

JFK Track Stars Brave the Elements & Warm Up for Winter Track at the Big Chill

Jessica Kendzor was 1st in the 1500 Meters and JFK's 4 x 400 Meter Relay Team (Asaro, Katsberg, Tolan, and Kendzor) won the last event of the day in the rain, snow, and cold of the Big Chill at Yorktown. Jessie Aprile placed second in the 55 Meter run. Dylan Schuck and Liam Perry finished 2nd in the High Jump Relay. The JFK boys finished 3rd in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay (According to Coach Elliott, Jason Devin was especially impressive), the 800 Meter Relay, and the Sprint Medley Relay. Katie Middlestadt placed third in the 1500 Meter walk. The girls' distance medley relay captured 3rd. Danielle Asaro placed 4th in the 600 Meter run.
